How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think lost audi keys I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car.
